Texas Water Development Board approves $2,568,600 to the City of Alamo (Hidalgo County) for water system improvements

AUSTIN – (September 10, 2026) – The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) today approved by resolution financial assistance in the amount of $2,568,600 to the City of Alamo (Hidalgo County), consisting of $785,000 in financing and $1,783,600 in principal forgiveness from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). The City will use the assistance for planning and design of a water system improvements project.

In addition to the principal forgiveness, the City could save approximately $136,000 over the life of the loan by using the DWSRF.

With the assistance approved today, the City will plan and design the expansion of its water treatment plant from 5 million gallons per day to 6 million gallons per day, which includes two new 1.3 million gallons per day water wells and a 25,000-gallon raw water storage tank, variable frequency drives, a membrane filtration system, a reverse osmosis system, waste handling, upgrades to the electrical and chemical feed systems, new SCADA, and a generator. The City also plans to develop an asset management plan.

The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional water and flood planning, and preparing the state water and flood plans. The TWDB administers cost-effective financial assistance programs for the construction of water supply, wastewater treatment, flood mitigation, and agricultural water conservation projects.
